The sub-headline on that Verge vibe-copying story: “One Amazon influencer makes a living posting content from her beige home.” Low-key trolling at its best

I am sat for the outcome of that vibe case. If she won that, I think we’d be seeing vibe lawsuits left right and centre

I find it incredibly interesting that this copyright dispute might actually set some new precedent. There was that whole discourse years ago over Black creators on TikTok having launched and laid the ground work for various dancing trends (all of them?) only to have their moves coopted by prominent white creators doing the same dances...only worse but for more views. It's something Im sure is still happening.

It's dang near hard to copyright a dance due to the complexity of movements. I interviewed a Nashville based producer and "music copyright extraordinaire" David Pellum about it years ago and though he was fighting hard for his clients' bags, he never made much traction in copyrighting the dances for his clients because many of the dances didn't meet certain criteria. I wonder if the outcome of this vibe dispute will reignite these issues at all.

I think it should be easier to copyright a dance than a vibe.

nice you made that connection, crossed my mind too. yeah I feel like goodlcuk copyrighting a vibe but these laws are going to adjust to accommodate how people make money these days

re your paragraph "everybody wants to be a designer, nobody wants to be a maker".

As an older woman who is an artisanal maker I've observed and mourn the loss of skills within the first world fashion industry. Consumers are so ignorant of the knowledge and skill it takes to make a beautiful garment.

I personally struggle to sell my handmade, unique wearable art pieces for a few hundred dollars. Ironically a China based mass manufacturing company recognised my talent to the extent they stole pictures of fifteen of my items, putting them in their online stores pretending it was a product they sold, to scam literally thousands of customers internationally. Good luck if buyers tried to return the crappy copies, they got ripped off again! They did this over 2 years and potentially made millions $$$ from my intellectual property. As a penniless artisan I was powerless to stop the copyright violation because while Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and Paypal were making $$$ out of it everybody was motivated to ignore my attempts to assert copyright.

Underlying all this was the demand from consumers for a as cheap as possible product.

this makes me so sad. I'm sorry this has been your experience. This sort of IP theft is so common and I hear stories like this all the time and marvel at the fact that there seems to be so little protection. SHEIN is a repeat offender! Hate them. And yeah, people are so used to getting this cheap and easy, little appreciation for making things. wonder where that'll leave us...

Kylie Kelce fascinates me and seems like the most down to earth one in that family. I want better for her tbh and I hope she gets $$$ from this podcast.

Podcast means getting paid to talk, I mean personally I'm a bit at odds how many truly listen, take it all in and live like that...can get Fox News anytime, talking heads too...niche too and in regards of all these Kelce family members, they gotta milk it right until a new Taylor emerges 🎧🙉❣️💯

As for online shopping - I think virtual try-on tech powered by AI and digital body modeling will be a thing within the next 3-5 years where we all have accurate 3D avatars that allow you to digitally try on clothes, with AI simulating how the fabric would lay on different users body types. Kinda looking forward to this era and not having to deal with as many returns bc I’ll know what will work on my body before purchasing.

True 💯 Books are our extended eyes, ears, dreams towards a new world, but discovered by opening, reading and enjoying a new to us book, adventures of a lifetime beckons well away from our instant always on societies of today wherever we live, with each book not read something eventually vanishes for good, sad but true 💯

When my kids were little, they had to keep a reading log for school, reading 20 minutes a day. So that became our standard. Want to go on the computer/Nintendo DS or watch Disney Channel? Did you do your homework and reading? Go ahead! This was before phones. So they grew up reading, and even if they didn’t read for pleasure in the college years, my daughter at least has come back around to reading again. At least they have that base knowledge.

Because I’m old (and from Chicago) when I hear ‘pheromone perfume’ I think of Marilyn Miglin’s Pheromone perfume. She had a huge store on Oak Street when I was growing up, now it’s sold on HSN. She died in 2022 and her husband was a victim of Andrew Cunanan.
