People who aren’t US citizens look at Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco and think that’s America.

And then they’re always shocked when they see these sort of election results...

But the reality is that most of America is NOT Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

They’re not very sophisticated.

this is what people are failing to see. people in America too. it shocks me that everyone is so surprised. and makes me sad. it was a POPULAR vote. it was not even CLOSE

Yes, progressive Americans always get too hopeful about social progress. Plus the one lesson we should learn from this is DO NOT RUN A WOMAN AGAINST TRUMP

It’s so sad though. That that’s something we should take away from this!

It’s past sophistication it’s basic human decency I fear 😭

Two things that have massively helped Reddit: Musk buying Twitter and the enshitification of Google Search.

Word! Especially that second one. Sometimes you just have to wait for your enemies to flop I guess

How's Substack going to do me dirty like that 😭

I live in DFW (Texas) and really believed in Kamala; I walked to my polling location from my house with my 18 year old daughter, who then voted in her first presidential election for a babe like Kamala -- I will love that memory forever. Still, my husband didn't want me to wear my camo Harris/Walz hat in public without him being around me... today I told him, "I kinda can't wait to wear it internationally now, so at least people will know we're not THOSE Americans" 🙈

this makes me smile! proud of you and your daughter and at least you did your part and voted for what you believed in. the world really is looking at America with lots if questions marks right now

I’m an American in Scotland, and 100% can confirm, it’s a rough day for it. I had a breakfast meeting and then headed home to wallow.

Thanks for critiquing the outrage I’ve been seeing about subscribers vs. followers on Substack!! I feel like people keep acting like the only reason they have more followers than subscribers is by accident. I know the follower button can be misleading, but have these publications considered that not everyone wants to subscribe to your newsletter…?

As someone who exclusively reads Substack on the app because I can’t handle any more emails, I don’t want a newsletter to transfer my subscription to another platform/email distribution program! Even if I like the content, the reason I’m subscribed is partly because of the Substack app and what its features have enabled writers/readers to do. To me, the Substack platform is essential to my engagement with these newsletters, not the other way around. I feel like the subscribers vs followers issue is less of a problem than a lot of newsletters make it out to be.

“but have these publications considered that not everyone wants to subscribe to your newsletter…?” The followed issue is really a non issue IMO

This is literally the only newsletter Substack that's worth reading for me rn. Thank you so much for literally saving this platform, Ochuko!

I subscribe to my newsletter using my work email, and I've been really frustrated lately. Substack keeps sending marketing updates like "Tugba posted this on Notes" or "Tugba started recommending this publication" —download the app to see."

Honestly, it's pretty annoying! There's no way for me to turn off these emails. I promise everyone who subscribes to my newsletter won't receive any junk, just my writing, but Substack continues to post these updates as if they are coming from me. I don't care what their app strategy is. They need to stop messing about with these things.

Ooop this would piss me off too. Funny cuz I don’t really get those notifications but what you said about Substack making it sound like all the spam is coming from you as actually pretty dangerous for a writer

as a gen z, yes, i am in hiding, only when the microcosm of online people tell me I am ridiculous and sexist and racist is it an issue

wdym hiding? like voted for trump and hiding? wanna hear more

The hiding part was in jest, I could write a 14000 page essay why I voted for Trump (and why my immigrant, gay, women, working class, poc, friends and family voted for him too). I talk at length with most people on the state of things here, but people who are so radicalized and intent on calling actual poc/gay/women stupid enough to be "self-hating" while sitting on a high horse not knowing basic facts about actual fascist (and marxist) leaders in history are people you just say "mhm" to and let be, because they're narcissists. It's mostly pseudo intellectual white liberal women. In earnest I don't have this much of an encounter with political narcissists outside of this group.

Also being incapable to talk about anything other than abortion regarding politics. I just nod and let them blame Trump for every leadership failure he apparently committed during Biden's presidency and why Kamala is brat and not why America became the laughing stock of the world while global tensions all suffered and our government keeps lying about all the wonderful work they did to help.... not a single county... and how BLM's funds bought mansions instead of supporting the communities of the deaths places of actual black Americans. Just let the microcosm of loud liberal americans call 70% of the population idiot fascists who don't want to see the American dream die as they wear nicer blue suits on why we are definitely gonna do something tangible.... next term!!! Next term!!!

People online don't realize how many mixed demographic Americans are cheering, I know the western world believes the media and that trump is a tyrannical idiot who starts wars.... although he already has an observable track record, he was also the only president since the 2000s that did not have Russia annexing or invading an external nation, Americans do not give a shit what the world thinks anymore because not one of you or your nations is capable of helping us and our people and especially or poor and Latino/ black population.

Trump won, my family could not be happier. We need strong leadership that isn't bending to the will of terrorist organizations. Canada will follow suit and corporations will stop exporting american jobs overseas. The woke bubble has popped, good riddance. America will be fixed.

https://youtu.be/ETMpx1DBibo?si=fVquSOPJZ3bdXCTi this vid is not me, but i got recommended it today. there are a lot of young people that feel invisible when it comes to their political stance, because the norm is no longer conservative at many schools / unis in the US, It's easy to get ostracized. this is somewhat relevant to your thing about this hidden group of republicans in the US

Depends on whom you wished to win, but more seriously more women voted for Donald J. Trump as for Kamala D. Harris, is that something to be agitated or disappointed about? Overthinking the matter doesn't really help, we all know that when there's a winner there's a loser until the next elections, it's a cycle and most people live in-between 🧐😓💯

Not sure what's the matter, the election was hold, people voted, there's a new president elect 🤔🇺🇸💯
