Ochuko please make your newsletter paid, it is literally too valuable to be free!! Also in re: breadwinners. A few of my friends (late 20s early 30s) have refused job offers or avoided going for promotions because they don’t want to earn more than their husbands because of how it would potentially affect the relationship. This is a real thing!
it'll happen I promise!!! and yeah its really wild its STILL such a thing but we love to act like its not. do you friends usually share with other people that they made this decision? because I feel like women do this but dont share as much
For at least one of my friends it’s not because she’s afraid of her husband being mean to her. It’s more of a preference than anything else. She knows it makes him feel good to feel like he’s taking care of her. They’re comfortable, it’s not like they need more money so that plays into it as well.
Like what are their combined finances like that they can 'afford' to leave money on the table like that, and how broke would they have to be for her to take it (what's her price, essentially, for his ego)?
What's the domestic work balance like? Who's taking care of kids/pets/elders? But we can probably guess those answers, lol
I've sold handbags for the last 9 years in an upscale department store in an upscale suburb. Every few years the fashion media insist COACH IS BACK, and it never is. There is a Big Ten University less than half an hour away as well as regular upscale suburban teens shopping in my store. It's all about Longchamp Le Pliage totes for school and the mini cosmetics bag (buy the non Longchamp crossbody strap from Amazon) as a crossbody. Marc Jacobs The Tote Bag is still selling well. The only women asking for Coach are the stereotypical Baby Boomers. The last time we had young people asking for Coach was when the Pillow Tabby first came out circa 2021.
"Every few years the fashion media insist COACH IS BACK, and it never is." LOL! This is so intresting. please share any more on the ground intel I love this
Love the Pistakio origin story! Oh and sad but not surprised to hear about the Walgreens-CVS-Rite Aid demise. I used to love mooching around those stores, browsing the make-up, toiletries, and candy. But when I was in NYC/LA over the summer, popping into any of them was so grim and depressing - absolutely everything is locked up, store fixtures falling apart, fluorescent lights flickering… I know shoplifting is a problem for retailers, but the vibes just aren’t that grim at Boots or Superdrug in the UK.
Yes! I live in the States but was in the UK this summer, and made a point of going to multiple Boots and Superdrug shops because they were so much more pleasant to browse in! Also I just love Boots, full stop
I’d like to see publishers stop acquiring books that they can’t put a marketing budget behind. I’d also like for publishers to pretend, for once, that they can’t rely on their backlist for revenue and then acquire frontlist titles more strategically. That’s just to start.
The RFK thing - I just finished the book “Ask Not” about Kennedy men and how terrible they historically are and how they destroy women’s lives in their wake!!! It’s a bit salacious but a delicious read and will add to your righteous fury
and re: pistachio, one of my favorite candle brands (and disclaimer, a client of mine! but I was a fan first!) has a candle called The Usual that has pistachio as a top note. It is *chef's kiss*

Personally my mom earned more than my dad and it drove a wedge between them so I understand really well why women do this.
This is sad to hear, and it makes me think of so many more questions for those couples....
wait like what?

"In the last month, Zuck has erected a statue in Priscilla’s image, bought her a custom Porsche minivan, and crowned her the disco queen."
Not the 7 ft statue! Why did my mind immediately go to what did he do.
Such a great issue, Ochuko!
thanks Alisha and same I became immediately suspicious!! that statue is CRAZY

I hope some cool shit happens soon in book publishing soon, too. More of the same is not going to cut it.
