that Eater article is embarrassing for the writer-- they really missed the point. Algae's value prop is that it's not a seed oil! There's a huge anti seed oil movement now that there has been so much substantive research that shows how unhealthy seed and vegetable oils are... Zero Acre Farms and Algae are the only two brands making a high heat cooking oil (that isn't coconut or avocado oil) without that health risk.
There are also so many layers of sustainability issues to unpack with seed oils-- making that article about high heat cooking is so lazy... this is why media is dead is all I'm saying.......
Zero Acre Farms has done a better job of making that point considering their founder was the OG blogger who published the research on seed oils and went semi viral for it with his "is Oatly bad for you?" piece. Algae seems to just be going mass and reaching more people with less specificity. Honestly, both are fine for the mission, which is just healthier planet and healthier standard American diet...
Yeah I remember that Oatly article. This is actually the first I’m hearing of zero acre farms I’ll have to check them out. I think a big point that Eater article made was that the algae oil was $20 which I don’t think is necessarily feasible for mass adoption. I wonder what the potential for bringing that price down is with further investment and research. Have you tried it ?
I am a regular customer of them both, ZAF is even more $$$. They’re expensive! It’s expensive to create a whole new supply chain. That price won’t come down unless there’s mass interest, I hope they both survive that long
I hope so too. I want to learn more about this corner of CPG. Everyone is making better for you claims these day it’s making it hard to know what real. Glad we had this convo I’ll be watching both brands now☺️
This newsletter is like if I actually cared about the biotech business comings and goings that are a constant topic of conversation at my job… oh so you mean business could be interesting! Who knew! Thank you Ochuko for compiling all of these headlines and discussing them in such an interesting way :)
1. Nara Smith holding a fish is all I need to keep me going through this week 2. cannibal girlies were really having a moment for a minute there so idk maybe Armie Hammer should just lean into it and make his little movie about that?? 3. I have heard good things about lemme's sleep one anecdotally, but u know what i'll try smoothing out my cellulite for science lmao
re: cannibal girlies, I'm thinking the books and shows that were ALL THE RAGE. A Certain Hunger, Woman Eating, Tender is the Flesh (the last one is less about women but just cannibalism in general) ... and then the shows Yellowjackets and Swarm. Carmen Maria Machado had an essay on it too I think?!
So many thoughts! First, I don’t care about clean beauty but maybe that’s because I’m in marketing and know it means nothing! Also, Camp Saie is giving Glossier circa 2016.
I just walked to my friend about this haha. did you read what she was being accused of? it's the dumbest stuff and I think people are just reaching. the way people hunger for the downfall of others just becasue they don't like their 'vibe' is deeply scary to me.
People are reaching, someone found her replies to that creator. And later she disagreed about knowing her. If it was any other creator, people would ignore. But she is getting so big and her content is so good that some are jealous. Classic Internet though.

Drops mic! Thanks for sharing this POV. It’s interesting in all the coverage I’ve seen about the brand, none of it has come from this angle…

I saw Lemme at Sprouts of all places?? Felt like
a miss - that’s not what I expect their ideal consumer to be
Do you think Nara’s downfall is coming? Over the last week I saw few videos accusing her of copying another creator.

Exactly. People online are so shady in the way they move sometimes.
When TikTok turns into reddit 😅
Ughhh both crazy places tbh
Nara is such a calm majority favorite. She feels here to stay 🤍
