A joy to spot myself in one of my fave (meatball) subs. FWIW: I think the older supers (Moss, Herzigova, etc) are *more* expensive than the regular catwalkers. (Can a model agent pls enter the chat and confirm!?) My other note - I wonder if the reason it felt like such a damp squib was bc they had Emanuelle Alt styling it… her style is so lowkey and French (dishabille rather than glossy) and does not translate to this particular catwalk imho

Hilarious Pandora damp squib is EXACTLY what I thought too when I saw the pictures this morning. A very British thought from us. I’d perhaps add the word (cheap) beforehand too.

Historically being British has not evoked this reaction 😂 but thank you, it means a lot that you think I’m cool x

The age of the super model is really gone. Do you think Bella and Gigi and the rest would have this much influence in like 30 years? There’s something about the lore and mystery of models that’s just gone. Agreed I don’t know Emanuelle but things were pretty off. I read somewhere that VS wanted to clothes to be shoppable, so moved away from the more campy costuming which I actually quite liked. Cringe but fun. The more I think about it the less impressed I am with the show. It just lacked the energy !

Expand full comment

No they defo won’t have this much influence, because it is too easy to be really really good looking now (in a very specific sense) and to dress well (because style is now so democratic)

Re kids & caffeine - “The plot twist would be if Starbucks makes a comeback as the Gen Z/Alpha third place.” This is exactly it. In my midsize northeast town, there is no other gathering place that is walkable and has space for teens to gather. They’re not coming for the caffeine.

Exactly I’m not mad about it. Malls are bike kids need a third space

I went to a small liberal arts college just outside Columbus, OH and right on the border of Lez Wexner’s creepy empire and boy oh boy was it weird. The town it’s all centered in kinda comes out of nowhere; you’re driving through beautiful farmland and cows and then all the sudden you’re surrounded by white fences, Teslas, and townhomes that look like they’re facades put up for a boring Halloween haunt. It’s all very… manicured feeling. Unnatural, inorganic, forced. I always felt like if I were to run into someone there at night, they wouldn’t have pupils or irises, just white, blank eyes. Anyway, that doesn’t say anything about the enterprise as a whole, it’s just always given me a weird feeling. Eerie place - but still Midwest nice!

The sex toy industry had its own Elizabeth Holmes and her name was Lora Haddock DiCarlo. Like most grifters, her origin story was constantly changing, in one she was a doctor, the next she was a med school dropout, in another she was a nurse who had aspirations to become a doctor...in short these were all lies. It's a wild story, she did get her white whale of a sex toy, The Ose to market where it was wildly overpriced and poorly reviewed, I can attest to it being a piece of overhyped shit. That didn't stop her, she came out with a new model along with a few more toys while announcing Cara Delevingne as the brand's new co-owner. Then one day the whole shop up and vanished, outlets that had ordered stock never received their orders, calls went unanswered, emails bounced back. Lora is nowhere to be found. If we talked about sex toys more openly, this would be a multi-part documentary on Hulu right now. This is the best rundown, paywalled but worth reading. https://fortune.com/2023/06/04/cara-delevingne-lora-dicarlo-sex-tech/

It's a lot. It speaks to how often celebrity brand ownership is just a PR move since at no time did anyone bother to ask "co owner" Cara Delevingne about any of this.

Probably made deals with the press to leave her out of it

Either that or no comment from her reps. She still has the Insta posts up that were promoting the toys. I don't know if she edited out any hashtags but the toy she's holding here: https://www.instagram.com/caradelevingne/p/CSzJP_br3f_/?img_index=1 is one of DiCarlo's. I know because I have it, this one actually works but the Ose....that was terrible.
